You don't need to know what's wrong before you call.
Emergency first
If water is escaping and you can't stop it, shut the main off before you do anything else. It's usually in a concrete box near the street or beside the front hose bib. Turn clockwise until it stops.
If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside before you call anyone else.
